How does mediation work?

In mediation, family members explain their concerns and needs to each other in the presence of a neutral impartial third person who is a qualified family mediator. The mediator helps them to communicate better with one another and reach their own agreed and informed decisions without taking sides.

All information revealed during the mediation process is private, unless the welfare of a child is at risk. In these cases, information can be passed on to the authorities to protect the child.

Mediation is suitable whether or not there are or have been legal proceedings and whether or not any, or all are legally represented.
